Jaipur to have AI-enabled hi-tech traffic signals soon

Jaipur: The Jaipur Commissionerate is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence-powered traffic signals at a few major intersections as part of a proposed AI-controlled traffic command center, officials said.While the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) is the nodal agency for installing traffic signals in consultation with the city traffic police, the traffic wing will independently install these AI-enabled systems. Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring future synchronisation with the proposed hi-tech Integrated traffic command centre.Speaking to TOI, a senior traffic official said the new signals will operate through a network of high-resolution cameras installed at junctions. The cameras will assess vehicle density on each approach road at any particular intersection, and the system will automatically determine the duration of green and red lights according to traffic volume.“The system will allow the congested lanes to clear faster, while minimizing unnecessary waiting times on less busy routes. In addition to traffic optimization, the technology supports enhanced road safety enforcement. The system can identify violations such as failure to wear helmets or seat belts and enable automated penalty processing,” the official added.Officials said the technology is expected to improve traffic flow at busy crossings and strengthen enforcement by detecting violations in real time.At present, one such AI-enabled traffic signal has been installed at Fatehpura Circle in Udaipur. Authorities are reviewing the outcome of that pilot project and are considering expanding the system to other parts of Rajasthan as part of wider efforts to modernize transport infrastructure.“As per the initial report, the technology seems to be successful. We discussed the issue during the last Traffic Control Board meeting of the JDA, where it was finalised that the Jaipur Commissionerate would install the technology on its own.
